A Warm Maui Sunset

Winter Cometh

It has been a very nice week weather wise in the Ozarks, but never fear, we have a saying in these parts. If you don’t like the weather wait five minutes. Its not uncommon to be 75 one day and then 35 then next. That big of a swing doesn’t usually happen, but it IS happening right now. Yesterday was in the mid 70’s and tonight it is supposed to get below freezing. Winter is coming (sigh). Anyway all of this got me thinking about Maui and how wonderful the weather there happens to be. I thought a nice warm sunset, Hawaii style would be just the thing for my winter blues.

The Civic Opera House

Performance

I am no stranger to performance. I was never an actor, but I did grow up performing music. Whether piano or voice, I spend a good deal of time onstage as a youngster.

Walking Downtown

I was headed from the Blue line stop toward Millennium Park in Chicago when I saw this lovely building. I stopped to take a few pictures, it serves as the Civic Theater and Opera house, one of the largest in the country. As I moved on I crossed the river. Then I started wondering, Why did I just cross the river? I had been walking the wrong way! I turned around and walked back the way I came, “losing” nearly an hour. Serendipity lead me to this place, and somehow I am most always rewarded for taking the road less traveled. Even when that road seems like a mistake at the time. Besides when you blunder on stage, you just keep going like nothing was ever wrong, and perhaps it never actually was.

Belvedere Castle Central Park

Weather Stations

While in New York, Pamela and I needed to cross the park. We were on the Upper West side and we needed to get to The Metropolitan Museum of art (Upper East side). We thought a walk across Central Park would be an wonderful way to take in some of the best sights in NYC. Honestly we just picked a path that cut straight through and left it to chance what we would find on our walk. We walked straight into a castle! Central Park NYC absolutely has a bit of whimsey! Apparently this is on of the best views in the park and it serves as a meteorological station taking temperate, wind speed, direction, etc. If you are on a random walk through Central Park, hope you hit this site. It’s quite a bit of fun!

Sunrise at Navy Pier

Good Morning

Some of the best light imaginable is at sunrise. There is another great thing about sunrise special to us photographers…you can get a shot without people. Almost everywhere I go, this is the secret to shots without throngs of tourists. Just get up at 4am, get to your location, wait for the sun to come up…BAM great photo. The only problem with this is much like everyone else in the world, I have a horrible time getting up early enough to be present for the sunrise. On the day I took this photo, I was up at 4am, rode the train into the city for an hour and braved a pretty blustery Chicago AM all without coffee for the first two hours. Of course I was rewarded with this view. Maybe I need to work on becoming more of a morning person.

Dusk Falls on Lincoln

Ghosts of Tourists Past

There a a HUGE number of tourists at the Lincoln Memorial. I waited around for a long time hoping they would eventually disperse, but I think perhaps if you want unencumbered shots of the monument, it may be advisable to come in the early hours of dawn. The sun would be behind you, but that would be a great shot as well. I attempted to use long exposures on this shot to blur as much of the activity as possible. It gives the shot a milky soup of action sort of feel. Enjoy!

Bicycles This Way…hmmmm

Bikes in the Rain

A quick photo for today. During SXSWi 2012 (boy are we going to miss SXSW 2013) I attended the Trey Ratcliff Google+ photo walk. It rained and rained and rained for the first half of South-By and the ill fated photo walk was part of this deluge. While waiting around for the even to start I caught this morose smiley-face like character indifferently directing cyclists to the Google bike racks. Enjoy!

Crystal Bridges on the Trail

Out Back

One of the fantastic parts of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville Arkansas is the hiking trails around the buildings. Perhaps the greatest treasure of Arkansas is in fact the outdoors. It is also fitting that one of the nations premiere American Art museums should devote such a grand “space” to nature itself. You can’t help but feel like perhaps the greatest exhibit is outside the confines of the walls of Crystal Bridges and rather out in the open air of the Natural State. One early morning Pamela and I hit the trails and took some photos. You can also see my last color shot of the Crystal Bridges Museum here.

Mother and Child

Madonna

No not THAT Madonna, think a little older. While visiting a wonderful hidden chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, I found this status nestled in a cozy little corner of the church. I think perhaps she (but especially the baby) wanted to have her picture taken. I was only happy to obliged…who am I to say no to a lady.

A Maui Cove

Over Land

Getting places in Maui often required a bit of legwork. The best places seemed to require a good deal of treacherous hiking and the Red Sand Beach was no exception. The think is, regardless of where you happen to look you get a wondrous view…the walk to this particular beach was no exception. After scaling down what by comparison was a rather small hillside (none the less deadly) we were greeted with this cove.

Somewhere in the Ozark Mountains

Heritage

I often prefer the big city, the ancient structure, the regal palace…its easy. Places like Sequoia National Forest or the Eiffel Tower are hard not to love. The most celebrated treasures of the world should be adored, but there are things closer to home, things we see every day which we too often ignore in our hustle and bustle world. The wonders of our own backyards should never be forgotten. I thought of this on a drive home from Eureka Springs Arkansas when I took this photo at a random scenic overlook. The treasure of others sparkle so brightly while we often ignore the glory and beauty of what we ourselves possess. Be thankful for your blessings. Be thankful to be where you are today…tomorrow it maybe gone.
