Rambling Man

I just got back from Buenos Aries, Argentina earlier this week. I really enjoyed myself, but South America is a very different part of the world. I don’t mean that in a bad way, simply different. I also passed a certain milestone…I have so far this year flown in excess of 50,000 miles. I don’t talk much on here about my other hobby of frequent flying, but I am well on my way to finish the year as an American Airlines Executive Platinum member (over 100,000 miles flown in a single year). It was a goal of mine at the beginning of the year that seemed almost impossible. It just goes to show, with proper planning, a great support team and a bit of perseverance, anything is possible!

More Trains!

If you have visited my blog in the past you know my love of trains. I usually end up at the train station when I visit cities all over the world. Whether subway stations, or Union Station, I just cant help but love trains!

Trains

I love trains. The blame falls squarely on the shoulders of my Uncle Patrick. When I was a boy, my uncle had the most wonderful model railroading sets in the upstairs of my Grandparents home. They were always in a constant state of construction and I am not sure I ever saw one of these designs ever finished. To my 9 year old eyes, however, they were the most amazing creations in the world. As I grew up, I half created my own versions of these same mechanical marvels. I too never quite finished the complete design, but from youth I still carry the love of all things locomotive.

A New Life

What happens to these grand old buildings is a current fascination wrought from the same love of that 9 year old boy. It seems after the trains stop running and the buildings have served their original purpose, only one of a handful of lives are left for these depots. In Kansas City and Paris, both Union Station and d’Orsay respectively, have become Museums (the latter being one of the most celebrated in the world). In Washington D.C. a different fate has come to its Union Station, though you can still see its soul through all the shine. She IS still.

Union Station Kansas City MO

Pop In for a Quick Photo

You never know where an interesting photo may present itself. We were in downtown KC for WordcampKC and during lunch decided to take a walk around. Who would think Union Station in Kansas City Missouri would have been so quiet. Really quiet. There were really only a handful of people and that let me capture a really empty hall with some interesting light.

Sticks (Tripod)

I was also surprised the guards didn’t seem to mind me using a mini tripod. I had left the Really Right Stuff sticks behind, but I had my new Manfrotto 709B DIGI (link to 209 legs with a different head). It’s TINY and fits nicely in your bag. Its pretty stable even for the 16-35mm lens and I can fold the legs up under the lens using the ballhead in a way most people wouldn’t notice you even had a tripod on your camera. Its like tripod stealth mode! While the ballhead is less than stellar, it is functional and this unit is a MUST for your camera bag.

Technicals

This is a 3 bracket series (-2, 0, +2) processed in Photomatix, Nik Software’s Color Efex Pro 4 (Tonal Contrast) and Sharpener Pro. The final touches were added in Adobe Lightroom 4.
